Prof. (Dr) Potti Laxmi Narayana Gangadhara Rao, Vice Chancellor, Manipal University
Prof. (Dr) Potti Laxmi Narayana Gangadhara Rao is a veteran in the area of Medical Education, Research, Clinical Services and Administration, with almost three and half decades of distinguished experience.
Popularly known among his peers as PLNG, he obtained his MBBS degree from the Kurnool Medical College, Kurnool, Andhra Pradesh, India in 1971 and MS (General Surgery) from the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, India in 1976.
Later, Dr Rao completed his MNAMS (Surgery) in 1977 from the National Board of Examinations, Delhi, India and also his MCh (Paediatric Surgery) in 1979 from the PGIMER, Chandigarh, India.
Dr Rao was instrumental in developing the Department of Paediatric Surgery as one of the few centres recognised by the Medical Council of India. This centre provides training programmes in Paediatric Surgery leading to the MCh (Paediatric Surgery) degree.
In 1993, Dr Rao was appointed as the first Registrar of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) which is now known as Manipal University. He was the first Dean of Melaka Manipal Medical College, Malaysia.
Dr Rao has published 29 papers in international peer reviewed journals and 64 in national peer reviewed journals. He has presented more than 40 papers at various national conferences, and guided several MS General Surgery students for their dissertation/thesis work.
Dr Rao has also authored a book ‘Problem Based Approach in Paediatric Surgery’ and contributed a chapter in the book ‘Neonatal Surgical Emergencies’ for ‘Advances in Surgery – Series 2’.
Dr PLNG Rao’s hobbies and interests include Medical Photography and creating Audio-Visual Aids.
